Fresh Easy Homemade Bagel Recipe

Learn how to make easy, simple homemade bagels with just a few ingredients. Perfectly chewy and delicious, no special skills required! Use this base recipe for any flavors you prefer.

Cook Time 25 minutes
Total Time 2 hours 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups or 360 ml Warm Water
  • 2 3/4 teaspoon Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 Tablespoon Sugar
  • 4 cups or 520 grams Bread Flour
  • 2 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 egg, beaten

Boiling

  • 2 Quarts Water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

1. Make Dough:
Mix 1 1/2 cups warm water, 2 3/4 tsp yeast in mixing bowl, and 1 Tablespoon sugar in bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes.** Add 4 cups flour and 2 tsp salt.
2. Knead Dough:
Knead by hand or mixer for 6-7 minutes. If sticky, sprinkle in a little flour. Dough is ready when soft, slightly tacky, and bounces back when poked.
3. Rise Dough:
Lightly grease a bowl with olive oil, place dough in it, and cover. Let rise at room temperature for 60-90 minutes until doubled.
4. Shape Bagels:
Punch dough down, divide into 8 pieces, and shape into balls. Poke a hole in the center of each ball and stretch it to about 2 inches. Form the bagel
5. Prepare Water Bath:
Boil 2 quarts water with 1 teaspoon baking soda. Drop bagels in, 2-4 at a time, and cook 1 minute per side.
6. Add Toppings and Bake Bagels:
Preheat oven to 425°F (218°C). Brush bagels with egg wash, then add whatever toppings you love, place on lined baking sheets, and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Cool before serving.

Notes

**When mixing the warm water, yeast and sugar, you should see foam or bubbles after 5 mintues. If not then the water might be too hot. Yeast likes warm water to activate.
